I grew up in Kansas and moved to New England during my time at Kansas State University. I transferred to Massachusetts College of Art to study painting. It is interesting to compare the two experiences. K-State was inventive and creative with space to work and high standards for hands-on information like learning to build stretcher bars, stretch canvases and prime them. I was a drawing major there and Mass Art noteably did not offer drawing as a major, so I switched to painting. While the art history classes at Mass Art were much better, surprisingly some of the studio classes at K-State were as good and even excelled in certain areas. A lot of my landscapes now are from Kansas. The beauty is stunning. Beauty can be found everywhere, but for me, the grace of the Flint Hills is breathtaking. Recently I have been exploring watercolors. I am enjoying the quickness, portability and benign nature of the paint, even if it is the most unforgiving of all the mediums! Switching up mediums challenges me to respond to things in a new light. I also went through a brief oil pastel phase that brought me to portraits. I am surprised at how much I enjoy them. Figure drawing might be my first love and I haven't been doing enough of it lately!
