About Kris Shaffer
The expansive landscapes of Kansas have shaped Kris Shaffer's vision as an artist from an early age. Raised in Prairie Village, a suburb of Kansas City, Shaffer spent her childhood there before her family relocated to a farm during her adolescence. The move was a significant transition. The country roads and open horizons of Kansas became both a balm and the foundation of her visual imagination. Those formative experiences continue to influence her work today.
Shaffer studied art at Kansas State University before moving to the Boston area to study painting at Massachusetts College of Art & Design under the renowned painter George Nick. After earning her BFA in Painting, she spent a year painting in the arroyos of Santa Fe, New Mexico, before moving to San Francisco, California.
While living on the west coast, she raised two sons and founded an interior design business. After relocating back to the Boston area with her family, painting took a secondary role as she focused on parenting and interior design.
It was the pandemic that prompted Shaffer to make the return to full-time painter. Her work is shown throughout New England, and the larger United States.
She recently co-founded Art Oasis Natick in Natick, Massachusetts with artist Mari Jae Benning. The two maintain their studios, host workshops, offer figure drawing sessions, and produce performances.

Artist Statement
My work is based on a simple conviction—the ordinary is anything but. I am drawn to familiar sights that frequently go unnoticed. Painting for me is the act of looking closely enough to uncover the beauty that familiarity often conceals.
Growing up in Kansas continues to shape the way I see the world. The vast country landscapes, gorgeous colors that change dramatically with the seasons and time of day, the ever present country roads that lead to places unknown, all still captivate me. Although I now live and exhibit throughout the Boston area, I visit Kansas frequently and always return with a wealth of photographs as reference to keep me busy until the next visit.
My book series started with the desire to paint urban landscapes. However, between New England weather and having young sons, I kept to the home. So, I made my own buildings out of books. I could control the light, the conditions of my studio, and still parent.
Figure drawing is my first love. From the first class, I was smitten, and I return to the figure often for both grounding and inspiration.
I now work primarily in oil paint, though watercolor, charcoal, graphite, and oil pastels challenge me to keep delving deeper into how to convey images. Across every medium, my goal remains the same: to create paintings that reward careful looking and encourage viewers to rediscover the extraordinary within the familiar. I hope my work invites viewers to pause, look deeply, and take in life's radiance, offering a reminder that beauty often reveals itself not through spectacle, but through attention.
